Boliden AB is investing over SEK 6 billion in the expansion of the Aitik mine in Sweden. This means a doubling of production capacity from 18 to 36 million tonnes of ore per year. Fläkt Woods is supplying all the ventilation for the Aitik expansion – an order of about SEK 15 million.

Almost a hundred square kilometres of new land has been prepared for the extended facility, which will include a new concentration plant. The ore in the mine lies in an area of metamorphic rock types and is extracted using an open cast system. The deposits consist of chalcopyrite, which contains copper, gold and silver.

Currently the expansion is at its most personnel-intensive; approximately 800 people are working in the area. Work on new buildings is starting to need fewer workers but all the installation work – including on the ventilation systems – is using a lot of staff. While the new facilities are being built production carries on as normal in the old plant a few kilometres away. This will be phased out by 2016 when the new Aitik facility will take over.

Commenting on the contract, Peter Hagman from Fläkt Woods said:
“It has been hard work, we got the request in early June last year,” and adds that he had already been helping the consultants in dimensioning units and fans before then. “These are some extremely powerful units and they are able to move more than 30 cubic metres a second.”

Peter Hagman worked all autumn with the various consultancy companies in calculating the size of the units required. In addition to the large units mentioned above for ventilation in the concentration plant and the flotation facility, there is also ventilation for laboratories, pumping stations, switchgear assemblies and offices.

“We compete worldwide and it feels great that Fläkt Woods has gained the trust of another big mining company, and that we will be supplying some 40 units, almost 100 axial-flow fans and an equal number of air heaters.”

“In January we took on the deal and now everything has to be delivered this summer. During the period of tender and final negotiations we carefully went through the contract unit by unit and because of this I feel that we have a full understanding of all the components needed,” Peter Hagman concludes.
